80th World’s Most Influential Woman Invited to Lithuania

Lithuania's ambassador to India Laimonas Talat-Kelpša, who is visiting India’s information technology capital of Bangalore, met the Chairman and Managing Director Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon Limited, a global biotech giant, on Tuesday.

Recent developments in the Lithuanian biotechnology sector and cooperation opportunities for Biocon and Lithuanian biotech companies were discussed at the meeting.

Mazumdar-Shaw appreciated the potential of Lithuanian biomedical device manufacturers and showed interest in the licensing rules for pharmaceuticals in Lithuania.

Biocon’s chairman also received a personal invitation from Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius of Lithuania to attend the Life Sciences Baltic international conference in Vilnius in September 2014.

Biocon is India's largest biotechnology company that develops and manufactures a variety of enzymes and drugs. It was started by Mazumdar-Shaw in 1978, in the garage of a rented house in Bangalore with a seed capital of Rs. 10,000.

In FY 2012-2013, Biocon’s total revenue reached $430 million, while the net profit for the period stood at $86 million.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was ranked 80th in the 2012 World’s 100 Most Powerful Women list by Forbes Magazine.
