Holy Mass held in Verapoly, Kerala in commemoration of Lithuania-born bishop Nicolaus Szostak
Renowned Lithuanian Catholic priest Fr. Ričardas Doveika has visited India recently. During his trip he specially paid a visit to the former cathedral of Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Joseph in Verapoly (Kerala), where the Holy Mass in Latin language was held in commemoration of the Lithuanian-born Catholic bishop Nicolaus Szostak, locally known as bishop Florence. It was in this cathedral that Nicolaus Szostak had served as Vicar Apostolic for 22 years (1751-1773) and was burried after his death.
In 2016 in endeavor to reconstruct this Indo-Lithuanian historical connection the commemorative plaque, cast in white marble stone with a Latin inscription, was installed in the church of Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Joseph.
After the Holy Mass under guidance of the local church representative Fr. Prasad, Fr. Ričardas Doveika visited the Sacred Heart Philosophy College in Aluva, where he interacted with the seminarians, also visited other eminent churches in Kochi, learned about the charitable and social work being done by the local Church in Kochi. Concurrently also were discussed the possibilities of the further strengthening of the ties between Lithuania and Kochi.
