LEGENDARY LITHUANIAN MOUNTAINEER VITKAUSKAS HONOURED AT THE EMBASSY OF LITHUANIA

On Thursday Lithuanian Embassy in Delhi hosted a reception in honour of the famous mountaineer from Lithuania Vladas Vitkauskas. The exhibition of his photographs from his mountaineering expeditions was also presented. The most famous exhibit of it is the Lithuanian national flag that has been hoisted on all the highest peaks of the world. “The man who has climbed the highest summit of the world is already a legend. But the deed committed by Vladas Vitkauskas 20 years ago made famous not only himself but also the state of Lithuania” – Lithuanian ambassador in India Laimonas Talat-Kelpša told the guests. Vladas Vitkauskas became the first Lithuanian to have scaled Mt. Everest on May 10, 1993. „It is symbolic that while commemmorating the 20th anniversary of ascent of Mt. Everest by the first Lithuanian we received news that a day ago the first Lithuanian woman Edita Nichols has climbed Mt. Everest“ – remarked the Ambassador. Vladas Vitkauskas had a stop-over in Delhi on his way to Nepal to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his ascent of Mr. Everest. In Kathmandu his exhibition of photographs will be inaugurated on May 25 in the presence of the Vice-president of Nepal H.E. Mr. Parmanand Jha. Since Lithuania has no representation in Nepal the Ambassador of the European Union Alexander Spachis will represent her at the event.
