LITHUANIAN MANDALA IN KATHMANDU

Lithuanian art Mandala has completed it’s journey in South Asia with the final performance in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal on November 9, at the annual event organised in the old Royal Palace to celebrate the occasion of Newari New Year and the biggest festival of lights in the year – Diwali.

The wool felt project “Mandala” by the textile artists group “Baltos kandys” and Mandala created in the form of contemporary dance by dance artists Kristina Dolinina and Marija Vojevudzkaja made a smooth entry into the Nepalese cultural festival. The festival for the diplomatic community of Kathmandu was organised by the company “Nepal Pavilion” and the Tourism Department of Nepal.  At the initiative of the Lithuanian Embassy in India Lithuania  became the guest country of the event  this year. The guest of honour of the festival, the Vice President of Nepal, H.E. Mr. Parmanand Jha, in his speech said that the performance revealing the cultural similarities between Lithuania and Nepal will bring closer the two countries, which have not only learned more about each other, but already started establishing the concrete contacts for co-operation in business, science and technology sectors.

Charge d’Affaires of the Lithuanian Embassy in India Mrs. Diana Mickevičienė while presenting the artists noted that today’s Lithuanian art interprets traditional crafts and traditions in a modern way, and seeks the connection points with other cultures.

In Nepal Mandala is one of the essential concepts defining the world and religious life, therefore the Lithuanian interpretation of Mandala was especially warmly received and appreciated by Nepalese audience. The art of wool felting is also very well known in Nepal, however the guests of the festival where impressed by unique flowers and fruits felted by Lithuanian artists, so unusual to Nepal.
