Lithuania’s golden day: two athletes take gold in World Modern Pentathlon Championships

It was a day to remember for the Baltic nation of Lithuania, as its two athletes won gold at the 2013 World Modern Pentathlon Championships in in Kaoshiung, Chinese Taipei, on Saturday.

After a season in which she has failed to reproduce the form that saw her take the Olympic gold last year, Laura Asadauskaitė delivered when she needed it to most, coming all the way up from 19th on the combined starting grid to become World Champion with some sensational shooting and impressively fast running in the final event of the day.

In a similar manner, Justinas Kinderis took the Men’s World Championships gold after a confident combined event. The World No.4 had earlier scored a perfect ride after having placed third in the fence and 16th in the pool.

“I am very very happy to win,” told Kinderis after the game. “It is great for Lithuania. We came here with only three athletes so to get two golds is absolutely fantastic.”

Both President and Prime Minister of Lithuania congratulated the athletes on the successful performance.

Lithuania has only three-million-large population but has been performing successfully in different sports.

A couple of weeks ago, a 16-years-old Rūta Meilutytė broke world record twice at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona and took gold in the 100m breaststroke and silver in the 50m.

Hopes are also high for the Lithuanian national basketball team, which is preparing itself for the FIBA EuroBasket 2013 championship, starting on September 4th. Lithuanian team had taken gold three times: in 1937, 1939 and 2003, silver in 1995 and bronze in 2007.
