On Thursday, September 18, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius met with Yusuf K. Hamied, Chairman of the Board of the Indian pharmaceutical company Cipla, during his visit to Lithuania. Possible cooperation and investment in Lithuania were discussed in the meeting. “The brightest of minds come from our land – you yourself are a great example of that. And the conditions for business development that we created during the ten years of our membership in the European Union are among the best in the world,” said the Head of Government A. Butkevičius.
“We invite you to take the opportunity for cooperation not only in the area of manufacturing, but also in the areas of research and logistics,” noted the Prime Minister of Lithuania. The guest, in turn, informed the Head of Government that he is ready to finance the internship of three Lithuanian scholars in India, in this way contributing to building a strong bilateral cooperation.Set up in 1935, company Cipla, with its Vilnius-born Chairman of the Board, Y.K. Hamied, is known as one of the largest manufacturers of generic drugs. Last year, the company's turnover amounted to about 1.7 billion dollars. Cipla is also known as a company that offers low-cost pharmaceuticals to help fight AIDS, cancer and other modern diseases. In 2013-2014, the company invested 100 million dollars in research.
The Government pays special attention to life sciences. Lithuania has been seen as a favourable ground for investments and business expansion, which might as well be confirmed by successful operation in Lithuania of world-class companies Thermo Fisher Scientific, Moog and Sicor / Teva Group. As a matter of fact, the World Bank’s “Doing Business” places Lithuania 17th in its ranking (6th among EU Member States).
