Ambassador D. Mickevičienė joined the largest-ever delegation of EU ambassadors on a visit to the Kingdom of Bhutan

On 15–17 October 2025, Ambassador of Lithuania to India Diana Mickevičienė participated in a joint visit of European Union Member States’ ambassadors to the Kingdom of Bhutan, organized by the EU Delegation to India at the invitation of Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.

The delegation included ambassadors from 21 EU Member States and a team led by a Vice President of the European Investment Bank, making it the largest-ever high-level EU mission to Bhutan.

The delegation was received by His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Foreign Minister D.N. Dhungyel, and other senior leaders. The visit marked the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Bhutan and the EU (as well as with Denmark and the Netherlands). On this occasion, a reception and concert were held, alongside meetings with representatives of UN agencies, NGOs, and the business community.

Bhutanese leaders expressed appreciation for the EU’s long-standing support to the country’s development, noting that the EU remains a reliable partner as Bhutan transitions to middle-income status. EU representatives reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to continue cooperation, support civil society, and contribute to the 2026 Investment Forum in Europe.

Discussions highlighted Bhutan’s rapid economic and social transformation, its ambitions in green energy, sustainable tourism, and high technology, and progress in implementing the visionary Gelephu Mindfulness City project.

Ambassador Mickevičienė also met with Ms. Ugyen Choden, Acting Governor of the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan, and Mr. Jigme Tenzing, Head of the GovTech Agency. The meetings focused on strengthening cooperation in fintech and govtech, building on the Lithuania–Bhutan Digital Financial Transformation Project launched in 2021, and contributing to His Majesty’s vision for the Gelephu Mindfulness City.

During the visit, the Ambassador also met curators of the Royal Textile Museum to discuss the possibility of exchanging exhibitions, recalling the exhibition of Bhutanese royal costumes displayed in Lithuania in 2019.
