India and Lithuania sign Cultural Exchange Program for 2016-2018
Lithuanian Minister of Culture Mr. Šarūnas Birutis paid a visit to India on March 11-13th.
In New Delhi, Minister Šarūnas Birutis met with his Indian counterpart Shri Mahesh Sharma on March 11th and signed the bilateral Cultural Exchange Program for the years 2016-2018.
The Program outlines the principles of bilateral cooperation in such fields as arts, theatre, cinema, protection and conservation of the cultural heritage. It also supports the expansion of direct relations between the museums, galleries and libraries of India and Lithuania.
The program has been negotiated since 2011. It stems from the Bilateral Agreement on Cooperation in the Spheres of Culture, Science and Education, signed in 2001.
During the high-level meeting, Minister Birutis also proposed to hold a major Lithuanian cultural event in India in 2017, dedicated to India’s 70th anniversary, and invited India to reciprocate in Lithuania in 2018, when the latter will celebrate its Centennial.
Minister Birutis’s visit to India is the first visit of a Lithuanian minister of culture to India during the course of the bilateral relations.
India and Lithuania established their diplomatic relations in 1992.
