Lithuanian Ambassador Visits the Maldives to Strengthen Partnership in Digital Transformation and Innovation

From 7 to 12 June 2026, the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to India, Diana Mickevičienė, accompanied by the Embassy's Economic Counsellor Kristina Brazevič, paid a working visit to the Maldives. During the visit, meetings were held with senior representatives of Maldivian state institutions, including Dr. Mohamed Kinaanath, Minister of State for Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Ali Shareef, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Dr. Hala Hameed, Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as representatives of the President's Office, key institutions responsible for digital transformation, the education sector, academia and civil society.

The visit focused on opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Lithuania and the Maldives in the fields of digital transformation, GovTech, cybersecurity, financial technologies, innovation and digital skills development. During the meetings, Ambassador Mickevičienė presented Lithuania's experience in developing digital public services, advancing GovTech solutions, strengthening cybersecurity and fostering an innovation-friendly environment for high-tech industries. The discussions also explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation at the governmental level in the areas of digital transformation, GovTech, innovation and the digitalisation of public services through the exchange of best practices and expertise.

Particular attention was devoted to the Maldives' national digital transformation programme, "Maldives 2.0", which aims to modernise public administration, digital public services and enhance the country's competitiveness. Maldivian counterparts underlined the country's growing need for partners able to share practical experience in public sector digitalisation, data governance, cybersecurity and human capacity development. Lithuania's experience in these areas was recognised as highly relevant.

During the meeting with the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, the parties discussed opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy, waste management, the circular economy and climate action. The Maldivian side presented the country's ambitions to increase the share of renewable energy, expand public-private partnerships and attract international partners in these areas.

The visit also focused on education and talent development. Ambassador Mickevičienė visited the Maldives National University, Finland International School Maldives and the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), where opportunities for cooperation in higher education, technology, artificial intelligence and the development of digital skills for girls and women were discussed. The Ambassador also presented Lithuanian initiatives promoting women's participation in the technology sector.

During the visit, Ambassador Mickevičienė also participated in an informal meeting with Maldivian women leaders, where participants discussed opportunities for cooperation in promoting digital skills, leadership and greater participation of girls and women in the technology sector.

The visit reaffirmed Lithuania's reputation in the Maldives as a trusted partner in digital transformation and innovation. It also identified new opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation, institutional partnerships and business links in areas where Lithuania's expertise can provide significant added value to the Maldives.
