Lithuanian Embassy in New Delhi remembers January 13th events, welcomes euro in Lithuania
Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in New Delhi invited its friends to remember the dramatic events of January 13, 1991 this Tuesday.
14 people were killed and hundreds wounded when the Soviet tanks rolled on a peaceful demonstration in an attempt to take over government buildings and the TV tower in Lithuania.
“On that night Lithuania defended herself against the Soviet aggression. Everybody got realized the Soviets are not going to stay on our soil. Therefore we celebrate this day as our day of victory,” Ambassador Laimonas Talat-Kelpša has said.
Traditionally in Lithuania, bonfires are set on the eve of January 13th, to recreate the atmosphere of the dramatic night 24 years ago. One such bonfire was also kindled at the premises of the Embassy in New Delhi.
The guests were served with a home-made stew and a cup of tea brewed on the open fire.
A display of Lithuanian euro coins was also arranged in the Embassy’s garden. Lithuania has joined the euro zone since January 1, 2015.
