Lithuanian kibinai wins the C. R. Park culinary competition
Lithuanian local dish ‘Kibinai’ earned public appreciation and expert acclaim during the culinary competition organized by the C.R. Park (South Delhi) Resident’s Welfare Association this Saturday. Prepared by Eglė Janulevičiūtė Raie Dey, Chair of the Indian Lithuanian Community, and her husband Arghya Dey, Kibinai was selected as Best Culinary Choice by both the public and the authoritative commission.
Vaibhav Roy, Junior Sous Chef at The Leela Palace Hotel of New Delhi (five star), was among the members of the evaluation commission.
‘We did know that Lithuanian cuisine is very good, but we couldn’t expect it would be so popular with the Indian foodies,’ said Eglė Janulevičiūtė after the competition.
‘Perhaps we should think of opening a Lithuanian restaurant in New Delhi,’ added her husband Arghya.
Along with Kibinai, the Dey family had also presented the history of the Karaite community in Lithuania, who had originally brought Kibinai from Asia to the Baltic Sea region.
Today the Karaite community in Lithuania is just 400-members strong, but they have preserved their native Karaite language and still profess their authentic religion.
In Lithuania, the Karaites are well known because of their original cuisine, but also because of their location in Trakai, which is home to the picturesque Trakai Castle of Lithuania’s Medieval kings.
C.R. Park is a colony in South Delhi which is home to a few lakhs of population, predominately of Bengali origin.
