Port of Klaipėda Presented in India: Cooperation Agreement Signed with Jawaharlal Nehru Port
On 27–31 October 2025, the Port of Klaipėda was presented at one of the world’s largest maritime events – India Maritime Week 2025, held in Mumbai. The Lithuanian seaport stood out as a European model of sustainable transformation and digital success.
The event brought together hundreds of participants from over 100 countries. Lithuania was represented by Mr. Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority and Ambassador Diana Mickevičienė.
Mr. Latakas was invited to speak in three high-level sessions organised by India’s leading think-tanks and corporations: at the Observer Research Foundation Geo-Economic Conference – “Reducing Concentration in Shipbuilding and Shipping Supply Chains” and “Coastal Resilience: Local Knowledge Meets Climate Adaptation” – as well as at the Chintan Research Foundation conference “Transnational Connectivity: Shaping Future Strategic Ties”.
In his interventions, Mr. Latakas presented Klaipėda Port’s potential and innovative solutions for international shipping and sustainable maritime economy, emphasising Lithuania’s aspiration to become part of the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
As a European leader in sustainable growth and digital transformation, the Port of Klaipėda can serve as an inspiring model for Indian ports, as India pursues its 2047 target to reduce emissions by 70%. A true “port of the future”, Klaipėda has become a testbed for digital innovation and a leader in developing green shipping corridors, contributing responsibly to global climate action.
The visit to Mumbai was also significant for Klaipėda Port due to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jawaharlal Nehru Port, India’s largest container port and the fifth largest in the world, operating five container terminals. The agreement commits both partners to strengthen cooperation within the IMEC framework, promote knowledge and best practice exchange, and develop new cargo flows between India and Northern Europe.
The signing ceremony was attended by Ambassador Diana Mickevičienė, whose initiative and continued engagement helped to establish the partnership and lay the foundation for the agreement.
During the visit, meetings were also held with Mr. Shantanu Thakur, India’s Minister of State for Ports and Shipping, Mr. Pranav Chaudhary, CEO of Adani Ports, and with the leadership of the Container Shipping Association of India and other maritime industry leaders.
