Possibilities for further development of bilateral relations between Lithuania and Bangladesh discussed in Dhaka

In a meeting on 17 May, Ambassador of Lithuania to India, Nepal and Bangladesh Laimonas Talat-Kelpša, who is on a visit to Dhaka, and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina Wajed discussed the possibilities for further development of bilateral relations.

Ambassador presented the history of Lithuania, current political and economical situation, marked the importance of national language in Lithuania and Bangladesh.

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh invited Lithuania to participate in the national book fair of Bangladesh (The Ekushey Book Fair) in February, 2016. This event is organized since 1972 and dedicated to the victiims who died on 21 February 1952 in a demonstration calling for the announcement of Bengali as one of the state languages of former United Pakistan.

In 2000 UNESCO declared the 21st of February - the International Mother Language Day.

Lithuania and Bangladesh established diplomatic relations in 1992.

Bilateral trade in 2014 amounted to 5.3 million euros, of which 4.5 million euros was Lithuanian exports to Bangladesh. The main export commodities were aircraft and their components, flax, and dairy products.

Ambassador of Lithuania L. Talat-Kelpša presented his Letters of Credence to the President of Bangladesh in January, 2015.
