Vilnius the best city to live in the EU, a pan-European survey reveals
Among all the European Union’s (EU) larger cities, Vilnius is a city of the happiest and most satisfied people, the latest report by the EU’s statistics department, Eurostat, indicates.
According to the report, 98% of Vilnius’ residents are satisfied with the quality of life in their city, closely followed by Stockholm and Copenhagen (97%), and Vienna and Luxembourg (96%).
Vilnius also shows one of the largest increases in the level of the citizens’ satisfaction, as compared with the results of the last survey conducted in 2012. Thus, the level of citizens’ satisfaction in Vilnius has grown by 5 percentage points, second only to Budapest (+6 pp) and Athens (+15 pp).
The survey “Perception of Quality of Life in European Cities” was commissioned by the EU’s chief executive, the European Commission, to get a snapshot of people’s opinion on a range of urban issues, such as employment, environment, housing, transport, culture, city services, and immigration.
The survey was conducted in 83 European cities.
Respondents were asked if they strongly agreed, somewhat agreed, somewhat disagreed or strongly disagreed with the statement: “I’m satisfied to live in my city.” The sum of the categories “strongly agree” and “somewhat agree” has been selected to represent the overall level of satisfaction.
Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania, has a population of 5,00,000. Its historical Old Town is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
