Visit to India by Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications Juras Taminskas and Klaipėda State Seaport Authority Director General Algis Latakas
During his visit to New Delhi, Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications Juras Taminskas discussed opportunities to strengthen maritime connectivity between Lithuania and India, expand cooperation between Klaipėda Port and Indian ports, and develop new partnerships in green shipping and technology. The Minister was accompanied by Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.
On 5–6 October, Algis Latakas participated in the regional Global Gateway Green Shipping Corridors and Hubs workshop in New Delhi, dedicated to the development of green shipping corridors and ports. He presented Klaipėda Port’s experience in developing sustainable infrastructure, advancing its green transition and exploring new energy solutions, and discussed opportunities for green shipping cooperation between Europe and India. Participation in this initiative is also important for Lithuania as it seeks to leverage the opportunities offered by Global Gateway to engage in EU-supported international projects and strengthen the involvement of Lithuanian companies and ports in green shipping, sustainable infrastructure and digitalisation.
At Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue 2026, held on 7–9 October, both Lithuanian representatives highlighted different aspects of Lithuania’s potential to strengthen maritime connectivity and promote sustainable port development. Speaking at a panel discussion on the security and resilience of global trade routes, Minister Taminskas emphasised the importance of diversifying transport routes, ensuring reliable infrastructure and fostering close cooperation between governments and businesses to strengthen supply chains. In a discussion on green ports and energy, Mr. Latakas presented Klaipėda Port’s experience in advancing its green transition and developing sustainable port infrastructure.
A Letter of Intent for the India–EU Green Shipping Corridor Coalition was signed during the forum. The initiative aims to connect India’s potential to produce green fuels, including green ammonia and methanol, with demand from Europe’s maritime transport and industrial sectors. This provides a basis for further dialogue on more sustainable maritime transport, green infrastructure and cooperation between European and Indian ports. Klaipėda Port is also interested in exploring opportunities to contribute to the development of green shipping corridors between India and Europe, building on existing maritime connections and further cooperation with Indian ports.
An important part of the visit was a meeting with Shri Shantanu Thakur, India’s Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Minister Taminskas and Mr. Latakas discussed further cooperation between Klaipėda Port and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), as well as opportunities to strengthen logistics links between India and Northern Europe. The memorandum of understanding signed by the two ports last year provides a framework for practical cooperation, and India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways expressed its readiness to support the implementation of the initiatives envisaged under the memorandum.
The meeting also addressed investment opportunities at Klaipėda Port. The Indian side was well informed about the planned development of the port’s southern section and acknowledged the potential for greater Indian business involvement. Potential areas of cooperation include port digitalisation, environmental solutions, maritime cybersecurity and green shipping. The discussion also covered the broader context of connectivity between India and Europe, including the potential of the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and opportunities to strengthen Lithuania’s and the Baltic region’s role in connecting India with Northern Europe.
The visit also focused on technological cooperation between Lithuania and India. During a meeting with representatives of Indian telecommunications and digital technology company Jio, the sides discussed opportunities for cooperation in telecommunications, 5G and 6G connectivity, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, space technologies and innovation. Lithuania’s technological capabilities in the Indian market were also showcased through a visit to the exhibition stand of Teltonika India, a Lithuanian provider of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, at India Mobile Congress.
The visit to New Delhi contributed to efforts to strengthen Lithuania–India cooperation in maritime transport, logistics and technology. Existing port links and the opportunities discussed provide a basis for developing joint projects, fostering business partnerships and strengthening Lithuania’s role as a partner for India in Europe.
